Our Story

Hello, We're I Dress Myself

All the way back in 2005, I Dress Myself was founded by Hannah and Peter Conway and began life with them printing in their spare bedroom and washing screens out in the shower.  That wasn't going to work long term and we moved into our first studio in a canal-side warehouse in Nottingham in 2006.  We always strived to live a low-impact and ethical lifestyle and made the important decision to move away from plastisol inks and solvents to only use eco-friendly water based inks, within our first year of trading.  Water based inks are trickier to use as they dry into the screens more easily so we offered a free advisory service to help others move over to water based inks too.

Seventeen years have passed since we first fell in love with screen printing and, today, we’re proud to produce eco-friendly, high quality shirts for fantastic artists, top galleries and brilliant bands all over the world.

These days, we’re based in the beautiful West Country, where we’re lucky to work with an immensely talented team.

What began as a love for the craft of printing has grown into our way of life, livelihood and lifelong passion.

Our Mission

To provide garment decoration in the most sustainable way possible, without compromising on quality

To continually develop our processes to improve sustainability, and prove that the eco-friendly way can be better than traditional, chemical-intensive methods.

To share our journey and encourage others to go eco-friendly too.

Our VAlues

INTEGRITY

We're open with our customers and our team about our pricing, finances and the way that we work.  Our business decisions are not purely based on finances - we work in accordance with our values.  We have rewritten the legal Articles to which our company is bound, so that the company will always be run in this way.  We believe in making accountable and congruent decisions based on a principle of genuine and positive communication. We strive to work on the Teal principle of business and make assumptions about our team according to the principles of trust and responsibility.

SUSTAINABILITY

This has always been a big part of who we are and what we're about.  It informs every decision we make in the business and works on lots of levels.  We try to work in a way that is sustainable for the environment as well as sustainable for our customers, our team, our suppliers and the wider community.

POSITIVITY

We recognise that times are challenging, both in terms of the environment and for individuals with the rising cost of living.  We feel that a positive can-do approach is necessary to overcome these challenges and that a positive mindset is essential for open and meaningful communications and relationships.

PIONEERING SPIRIT

This keeps it exciting for us.  Our team loves learning and we each take responsibility for helping to move us forwards, testing new processes and investigating new options for sustainable products.

We make these assumptions about the idm team

Idm people :

Are trustworthy adults.

Are accountable and make congruent decisions based on advice from their peers.

See that value is created on the shop floor and help to support this function.

Are fallible and make mistakes.

Want to use their talents and skills to make a positive contribution to the organisation and to the world.

RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR ENGLAND (rDPE) FUNDING

We are happy to have been awarded funding by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development for our 'Eco-Embroidery' project.  The grant is towards our six-head state-of-the-art embroidery machine as well as for a couple of other pieces of equipment to help us improve our production efficiency.  This EU funding helped us to create an additional three full time jobs over the next 2-3 years.
